How Valuable Is Your Incompetence?
Reflecting on my conversation with my father on the book, "The Peter Principle"
So many of us have had to deal with incompetent bosses in our lives, across many industries and we all laughed when we saw our experiences broadcast through the fictionalized interpretation on The Office. Before the TV series The Office was broadcast was The Peter Principle. The Peter Principle was developed by former USC professor Lawrence J. Peter in the 1960s and came out as a book in 1970 as a scientific approach to an otherwise comedic topic. What are there so many crappy people in middle management, upper management, and even senior leadership positions? This book isn’t just about business, but applies to all sorts of hierarchies, spanning business, politics, the military, religious organizations, university and other administrative positions.

As I reflect on the conversation my dad and I had on this book, I think that we all need to be more hyperaware of our own limitations and know when to get further training or seek expert help when we become aware of our own deficiencies. In my own case, I know where I am talented and where I am lacking; I also know that there are many areas where I may not be aware of how much I do not know. That is an important step in striving beyond mediocrity.
