Daylight Savings Time Has Jumped the Shark
I was never really impacted by Daylight Savings Time (or the “End of Daylight Savings Time”) the way others seem to be. On my end, the reason is simple: I suck at sleeping. Not only am I terrible at sleeping, but I have a tendency to wake up a few hours prior to sunrise. I feel guilty and unproductive if I sleep in. Don’t judge me for it (and don’t worry I won’t judge you for enjoying sleep). That said, I never got the joy of sleeping in the extra hour nor the bitterness of the hour lost.
Short digression: If ever I was commuting in the wee hours of the morning, I would always call the old people in my life (especially my grandfather) who would wake up super early, as most old folks do, and talk to them on my drive. I miss those talks.
Now that we have a number of devices connected to networks that tell time for us, we have the time changed for us without having to do it ourselves as widely as in earlier times. The lockdown culture, impacting both homes and places we’d normally frequent (churches, restaurants, sporting events, remote work, etc.), has decreased our incentives to get up early. Here we are then, where the sting of losing an hour has been mollified and the bliss of the extra hour may be missed entirely.
But… given the fact that this has never really impacted me, I could be entirely off base. If you relate or you think I’m full of crap, feel free to comment below and provide me with some perspective. I will think about it when I’m not sleeping.
I think DST has outgrown its usefulness, it may have been useful during a war time or when we were rationing energy, but at this point we could just get rid of it. I expect it to remain just because there are so many other priorities, I wouldn't expect any politician to ever enter office passionate about changing DST.
